The term character athlete can mean something different to each person that hears it. Kaden Stanley says that it boils down to being an example to others without worrying about what happens.

“Earning the title character athlete requires hard work and persistence,” he said. “No matter what is going on, you have to stick with it and work through it. And you have to come in and working hard every day, even on those days when you don’t feel like it.”

Stanley is a junior at Claremore High School. He is a member of the Zebra’s wrestling team, wrestling at 126 pounds. He has been in wrestling for about ten years. Kaden chose to get into wrestling after some consideration.

“My dad and my grandpa are the ones that first got me interested in wrestling,” he said. “I feel that’s how a lot of people get their start, but that’s also why many people feel forced into it as well. My family did a good job with letting me figure out if I liked it for myself, and I fell in love with the sport.”

His coaches have been great role models, according to Kaden.

“They are dependable,” he said. “They aren’t necessarily my role models because they’re good wrestlers, it’s just that no matter what, I know they have my back, and I know I can count on them when I need to most.”

Kaden watches a lot of NCAA wrestling, always trying to learn more.

“I was able to meet Michael Williams last year,” he stated. “He is a Claremore alumni and I have been able to start working out with him quite a bit. It's always nice to have another person you can learn from. He is really someone that I look up to.”
