Fairland’s Trey Martin - Spotlight Presented By Grand Savings Bank

By Chandler Vessels

It didn’t take long last season for football to make its mark on Trey Martin, and vice versa.

After spending his first two seasons at Fairland high school as a basketball player only, Martin joined the Owls’ football team in his junior year. He played safety and found himself with a pick 6 in his first game.

From that point, he knew there was something special about football.

“When I reached the end zone, it was the best feeling I had ever had,” he said. “It was a better feeling than hitting a 3-pointer or dunking a basketball to be honest.”

Martin, who plays receiver on offense, said he still prefers playing basketball, though he feels more of a kinship in football. He was described by coaches as a team leader that works gets along with teammates and coaches alike. With a coaching change on the gridiron and a new spirit of commitment, Martin feels confident the team will see improvement in his final year.

“I just want to have a winning season,” he said. “Whether that’s 5-4 or 6-3 I just want a winning season my senior year. With this new coaching staff we’ve got, they’re really trying to implement a new culture. Get out of our old habits.”

In any case, he is just happy to have a season this year. Martin is thankful he will get one more year with his friends making memories on the football field.

“I was pumped,” he said. “Friday Night Lights are a lot different than anything else.”
