Fairland High School junior Scout Mayfield couldn’t imagine a life without sports.

“Sports are a way for me to escape from anything going on in my life,” said Scout. “I can always resort to sports to make me feel better and put me in a better mood.”

Being in a family of athletes, sports was something that was always in her life.

“I’ve been involved in sports since the local programs would let me,” Scout said.

Scout is a very busy junior. She plays slowpitch and fastpitch softball, basketball, runs track, and cheers. As a student she is involved in FCA, NHS, and takes classes at NEO on top of her high school classes.

“Balancing school and sports can be difficult at times, but I always try and plan my days ahead so I can fit in everything I need to get done for school,” said Scout.

Being an athlete and leader at school Scout loves that she can be a role model for younger kids and her peers.

“There is nothing more that I love than when I can look up in the stands and see little kids cheering me on,” said Scout. “Those kids are what keep me most motivated; I want to be that good influence to someone.”

Scout’s biggest inspiration is her brother.

“He has taught me so many life lessons without even knowing that he is doing it,” said Scout. “The main thing I can take from him is that no matter how hard life can get, there is someone rooting for you to keep pushing.”

Playing so many sports Scout has a ton of great memories, but her biggest highlight comes from basketball.

“Making the pass to tie up our area game and sending us into overtime in basketball,” said Scout.

After Scout graduates high school she plans on finishing up her basic classes at NEO then she would like to eventually transfer to the University of Alabama and attend dental school.
