Jay’s Loran Kirk - Athlete Spotlight - Presented by Grove Dental Associates
By Derrick Smith
Throughout the career of a high school student-athlete, there are a variety of memorable moments and experiences. These are moments that they will carry with them long after their high school years are over. Loran Kirk says that he has enjoyed a few moments like that. “I have a couple of highlight moments from my career,” Kirk said. “Running at the state track meet and lifting at the state powerlifting meet both times were really awesome. Also, every time I was able to represent my school on the football field.”
Loran, a senior, is a multisport athlete at Jay High School. He runs the 4x800, 4x400, and the open 800 on the track, while on the football field, you can find him at wide receiver, running back, and defensive back. On the hardwood, he plays point guard and he is in the 181 pound weight class in powerlifting.
Reaching those memorable moments did not come without a price, but Kirk says he has enjoyed it. “It has taken a lot to be successful in sports,” he stated. “I have always bet on myself, worked hard, and have been determined to get to where I want to be. It also helps to have the right group of friends to back you.”
While he has enjoyed a lot of great moments, Loran knows that he would not have been able to reach this level of success without the influence of some great people. “There have been a few people that have had an impact on me,” he said. “Coach Warren Kirk, coach Cameron Smith, and my youth pastor Cole Wheeler. They are my biggest role models because they want me to succeed and they have all done a lot of things to make sure I am the best athlete and person I can be.”
Along with athletics, Loran serves as vice president of the student council, is a member of the National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, science club, math club, Indian club, and the Mount Hermon Youth Group.
