Ketchum’s James Johnson - Athlete Spotlight - Presented by Grove Dental Associates

By Derrick Smith

Ketchum’s James Johnson says that while he has had a lot of great moments, his favorite memory so far happened when he was playing baseball during his freshman year. “The biggest highlight of my career took place my first year on the varsity team,” he said. “Our squad made it to the second round of the baseball state tournament. I got called on to start in the second-round game and it was an awesome feeling to be starting in such an important game.”

Johnson is a senior at Ketchum High School. He plays pitcher and centerfield for the baseball team. He played in his first baseball game when he was three years old. He fell in love with the game then and has played it since. He is also a member of the school’s football team.

There have been quite a few people that have influenced Johnson’s life and career, but he says that there are two people that have made the biggest impact. “My parents have been the biggest role models in my life,” he said. “They always push me to be the best that I can be and to work hard for whatever I want. I would not be where I am today without them.”

James says that another person that has been a big part of his life has been Ryan Rogers. “He has taught me a lot,” he said. “He showed me how to have good character and be a leader both on and off the field.”

The success that Johnson has enjoyed over the years did not just happen. It was something that he had to work for. “It takes more than just work to be successful in any sport,” he said. “I have tried to be coachable and listen to everything my coaches tell me. And to be at every practice, ready to learn and put in the work.”
