Vinita’s Mollie Bassett - Athlete Spotlight Presented By Northeast Tech

Most high school athletes depend on their teammates to work together as a cohesive unit to insure victory. Vinita High School junior Mollie Bassett depends on a unique kind of teammate, her horse.

“In rodeo, my team would be the horses I ride and my team never fails to put me in the best position to compete,” said Bassett.

Competing in high school rodeo in breakaway roping is a tough sport, but Bassett loves a challenge.

Also a member of National Honor Society at Northeast Tech, Bassett is enrolled in the Cosmetology program while holding an office in NHS.

“My favorite high school subject would be my cosmetology class and my favorite teacher would be Mrs. Davenport. She comes from the same type of background as me and has the same interests as me moving forward,” said Bassett. “I love being part of a prestige school and gaining knowledge while learning hands on for my career path in the future. I enjoy learning everything I will need in the future for my career. I picked the cosmetology program because I have always had a love for hair, makeup, nails and all things that come along with cosmetology.”

That future includes continuing her education and being a member of the rodeo team in college. But during the COVID-19 outbreak, Bassett has taken advantage of the extra free time on her schedule.

“During this break I have been working and taking advantage of my free time by roping all afternoon everyday,” said Bassett.

Even though the year was cut short at school Bassett reflected on her favorite memory of the school year and wanted to send a message to her family and classmates.

“My favorite memory would be when Mrs. Davenport took me to a career fair where she was the speaker,” said Bassett. “I would like to say thank you to my family and classmates for helping me and pushing me to be my very best in everything I do.”
