Inola Lady Longhorns - 2020 Basketball Preview Feature - Presented by Roberts Auto Center
Coach: Larry Callison
2019-20 Record: 11-14
Winning in sports, basketball included requires a combination of dedicated players with talent and/or potential and the influence of a coach that understands the meaning of success. The Lady Longhorns appear to have the ingredients to re-create a winning environment. With a coaching career that spans four decades, Larry Callison will come out of retirement for a second time to guide the future of the Inola girls basketball program. With three returning seniors to rebuild this year’s talent pool around, Callison understands his challenge or as he calls it, opportunity. “We’re going to be young but with the mix of three starters and some talented younger players we’ve got a good chance to be more competitive,” Callison said with his smile of confidence. A signature of past Callison coached teams, Inola will have front line size as post player Kylee Day (6-0, Sr.), an early signee with Rogers State University who can score outside as well as in the paint reunites with forward Emma Bell (5-5, Sr.) and playmaking guard Madison Courtney (5-3, Sr.) as returning starters. Callison also points to the non-stop energy of guards Miller Weast (5-7, Fr.) and Ellee Bryant (5-5, Fr.) to allow the Lady Longhorns to ramp up the defensive pressure, a familiar trait of Callison’s teams. “We want to push the ball and play up tempo offensively,” Callison explained. “But, you can win a lot of games when your full court defense can speed up the game, create turnovers that result in added scoring chances. We’ll be improved and will also have more depth.” SOMETHING TO WATCH – Between coaching girls and boys basketball in the state of Oklahoma, Larry Callison has more than 900 career wins. After winning three championships in six years at Sequoyah Tahlequah, can the Callison Magic work for the Lady Longhorns?
