Red Crown Salina

By Travis Sloat

Being involved in team sports with her kids has always been a goal for Tiffany Smith, who is the “Mom of the Month” for the Salina wrestling team.

“All of my children have gone to Salina,” Smith said. “I have two there now. Wrestling season is hard because I try to be at the gym every day to help with the laundry and mopping the mats. I also try to make sure the boys have food for long weekend tournaments and duals.”

Smith said helping out is an attitude that was handed down to her from her parents.

“My parents always helped with the wrestlers and the programs at Salina,” she said, “I thought that’s what good parents did. I thought it was normal to help out and be there for the kids, so I just started helping when I had sons in the programs. It’s been an honor to be a part of it. God sees the good we do.”

Being as close to the team as she is, Smith said it can sometimes be tough to be a spectator when it comes time for the matches.

“Your heart is out on the mat,” Smith said. “My kids have played almost all sports, but there’s something about wrestling. There’s no other feeling like it. Your boy is out there all by himself, and no one can help him. It’s all on him.”

Smith added that she is her son’s (Brier Smith, who is also featured in this month’s issue) biggest fan.

“I want him to know to never give up,” she said. “Fight through the pain, and always believe in yourself. Have heart and know that determination is key. Have heart!”
